Nice to Meet You
Hello,
I am Maya Shandilay. I am a Theatre Director and Voice Over artist based in Chicago who is excited about storytelling.
As a Theatre Artist: My favorite thing about theatre is being able to create shows that are in constant conversation with an audience and the community coming to see my shows. The goal I have for my art is to either challenge, encourage, or question an audience’s perspective on certain ideas through engaging and creative choices. I find myself often drawn to absurdist and surrealist plays in addition to my love for Shakespeare. As a Nerd and Geek for many different areas of life, my process often involves me doing deep research into the topics brought up in the productions themselves, as well as my own desire to bring cultural moments and interests to the stage. An example of this would be my take on “The Chairs” by Eugene Ionesco and the use of early 2000s nostalgia to discuss fleeting moments of time for the age of the audience who attended. Over my Time as a Director, I was able to study under Stephanie Shaw and work with Theatre Directors such as Jeremy Cohn, Michael Brown, and Michael Pouge, who all helped me to develop my voice that now enhances my perspective.
As a Voice Over Artist, I have always loved performing and telling stories. I find Voice Over to be engaging and fun! In both voice-over and Live performance, I find myself drawn to and inspired by various Animated Movies and TV. Shows and hope to be able to work on one in the future. Over my time as a VO Artist, I have had the opportunity to study with other artists, including Angelia Morris, Marcella Mencotti, Brad Grusnick, and Deb Doetzer
